Happy Summer Solstice!

My favorite day of the year! Midsummer is Scandinavia’s most popular festival right along with Christmas. A traditional celebration of the Summer solstice, midsummer is the longest day of the year. Midsummer was originally a fertility festival with many customs and rituals associated with nature and with the hope for a good harvest the coming fall/autumn. It is believed to bring good health to roll around naked in the midsummer dew. Tradition dictates that if a woman puts flowers under her pillow that night, she will dream of her future husband. Hey, it may be worth a try. πŸ˜‰

For my kickoff to summer, I decided to cut my hair. just a few inches, but that was enough to make me feel summer-y and fresh.

I’ve always wondered why my green eyes were constantly appearing to change color. Sometimes they look almost yellow and other times deep green. I read an article about eye color and now it all makes sense. Green eyes result when the upper layer of the iris is yellowish in color. They then appear green due to a principle that affects how humans perceive color and light called Rayleigh scattering. This is a natural phenomenon which is also the reason why the sky appears blue when we look up at it and why the sun looks yellowish. Blue or green pigments are not present in the human iris so it is the Rayleigh scattering of light which causes the coloration of green eyes. Eye color is an instance of structural color and varies depending on the lighting conditions, especially for lighter-colored eyes. I’ll go as far as to say that my eyes will change color depending on my mood, as well. It’s learning to decode what color means what that’s the trick! There’s definitely a correlation, but I like to let people figure it out on their own. πŸ™‚
